The Huangpu River is the city's main shipping artery to both the East China Sea and the mouth of the Yangzi River, 30 kilometres north of downtown. It sustains about one-third of China's total international trade. There are three cruises up the waterway, lasting from one hour to three-and-a-half hours. The first takes you on a loop in front of the Bund and on the other side the skyscrapers of Pudong. (Alternatively you can take the cheaper regular ferry to Pudong and appreciate the Bund during a walk along the Riverside Promenade, with a stop for a beer at the Paulaner Brauhaus.) If it’s a toss up between the two longer tours, then opt for the longer one, which will take you on a 60 kilometre round trip to the mouth of the Yangzi.
